Comcast Email Issues

Port 25 SMTP blocked

Port 25 SMTP blocked – Thanks for the heads-up Comcast!

Well to start the new year off right, it would seem that Comcast/XFinity is rolling out some less-than well known or publicized updates for their Internet customers.  While the reasons for this change are many (and understandable with some background information), the fact that it is not more directly addressed or openly communicated with especially the business customers leaves most of us scratching our heads over the weekend.

Understandably, many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) such as Comcast have been blocking Port 25 for some time now – this isn’t new news.  However, it would seem that Port 26 – a workaround for Port 25 that has worked for years – is no longer being supported and/or is now being blocked as well.

Billing FAQs

questionQ. How often am I billed?
A. It depends on the services you have selected and what options you choose when setting up a subscription.  For example, if you choose an annual web hosting subscription, you will only be billed once per year several days before the date that you started the subscription the previous year.  However if you are making a payment for service rendered such as logo design work or designing a business card, you will only be invoiced/billed once unless other payment arrangements have been agreed upon by you and RVHWD prior to the work beginning.

Q. Do you have a money-back guarantee?
A.  Yes.  All new web hosting customers qualify for RVHWD 30 Day Money-Back Satisfaction Guarantee.  If for any reason, you are not satisfied with your web hosting services, simply Contact RVHWD before the thirtieth (30th) day from the creation of your subscription for the 100% money-back, no questions asked refund.

Q. What forms of payment do you accept?
A. RVHWD accepts most major credit/debit cards (American Express, Discover, Master Card & Visa), PayPal and eCheck/EFT/bank draft.  RVHWD also accepts money orders, cashiers checks and personal checks but they take additional time for payment processing.  Please Contact RVHWD prior to sending any money order or paper check for proper authorization and mailing instructions.

Q. How do I make a payment?
A. For web hosting, your subscription is set up to automatically be drawn on a monthly or yearly basis depending on your choice upon setting up an account.  All other products and services will be invoiced via PayPal with various payment options including instant payment options for some products and for all services you will receive an email invoice from RVHWD via PayPal.

PLEASE NOTE: Other payment options may be available soon as well; details will be posted as they are confirmed and instituted.

Q. How do I discontinue subscription billing?
A. Should you wish to discontinue your web hosting subscription, please be sure to Contact RVHWD at least ten (10) business days prior to your next billing cycle.  Typically subscriptions will be cancelled within 24 hours of the notification.  There will be no refund for unused time left in a billing cycle.

PLEASE NOTE: With the cancellation of your web hosting account, be aware that all content on our web server (i.e. your web pages, pictures, etc.) will also be deleted upon the cancellation of your account and are not recoverable at that point.  Be sure that you have your site content backed up locally or RVHWD can provide this service for you, for a nominal fee.

SSL Certificate FAQs

questionQ. What is a SSL Certificate?
A. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and it is a certificate that resides on your web hosting account.  It is used to create or provide a secure connection between a site visitor’s web browser and the web page(s) on your web hosting account.  It is used to transmit private information online, safely and securely such as in an online purchase transaction through a web store.  Whenever someone visits a page with a SSL Certificate, a padlock will be displayed in the web browser, may change the color of the link in the URL address bar and typically begins with https://

Q. What is a SSL Certificate used for?
A. Quite simply, SSL is used by millions of eBusiness or eCommerce web sites all over the world!  It is used to protect customers private and/or financial information during an online transaction, keeping their information confidential.  All web browsers are capable of handling SSL Certificates as long as the certificate is current and from a recognized provider or Certificate Authority (CA).

Q. Do I need a SSL Certificate for my site?
A. The world wide web has created an abundance of opportunities for new or existing businesses to create sales online.  With this incredible opportunity has come a virtual tidal-wave of fraudulent cyber crooks looking to steal credit card and bank account information.  Unless the connection is secure between the user’s web browser and the web page, most any hacker with moderate skills can intercept and view this information.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are looking for web hosting for an existing eCommerce web site or looking to start one, obtaining and maintaining a SSL Certificate for your site is critically important.

Q. How do I get a SSL Certificate for my web site?
A. You may obtain one on your own or RVHWD can take care of this for you for a nominal fee.  In either case, your name, your business name and address as well as some additional information will be required and installed to your web hosting account properly in order for it to work.  Improperly installed or expired SSL Certificates will cause site visitor browsers to display a warning message and will decrease your ranking on some search engines such as Google.

Q. How much does a SSL Certificate cost?
A. It varies from one Certificate Authority to the next and can range greatly in price from about $60 to more than $300 per year.  If you want RVHWD to take care of all the details, use the Contact form to get more details and a custom price quote.

Parked Domain FAQs

questionATTENTION: READ THIS BEFORE SETTING UP A PARKED DOMAIN!

Q. What is a Parked Domain?
A. A parked domain is a domain name that is added to your existing web site.  For example, if your site was created using MyDomain.com and you have another domain named MyDomain.net, you may park the .NET version on your .COM site and using either web address will render the same web content (i.e. your web site).

Q. What is a Parked Domain used for?
A. Often this is used as a means of grouping similar domain names together on one site without the need of duplicating your entire web site or having to purchase web hosting accounts for each.  An example of this would be a business that purchases several TLD versions of the same name, such as MyBusiness.com, MyBusiness.net, MyBusiness.info and MyBusiness.org.  The .COM name would be used to create the hosting account and the .NET, .INFO and .ORG domain names would be parked; all four domain names will display the same web site and content.

Example: You have a web store in the directory “/store/” with the home page being “index.php” on your site and you have several domain names as used above.  Anyone visiting MyBusiness.com/store/index.php will see the same exact web page as someone visiting MyBusiness.net/store/index.php.

Q. How do I set up a Parked Domain on my existing web hosting account?
A. Provided that you have already purchased the additional domain names and followed the steps in the DNS FAQs, you are ready to log into your cPanel and click on the Parked Domains button.  This page will guide you through the process of adding the additional domain(s) as parked on your main domain name and web hosting account.

WARNING: If you add any additional settings such as user names and passwords to your parked domain(s), this will change how your site is displayed whenever someone follows one of your parked domains instead of the main domain name and may even cause issues for all versions of your web site being displayed for site visitors.

Web Hosting FAQs

questionQ. What are your web hosting packages?
A. RVHWD offers three distinct packages for various types of personal and business web sites.  These are in order from smallest to largest; Starter, Advanced and Enterprise web hosting packages.  For more information about RVHWD’s web hosting packages or to begin hosting your web site, please visit the Web Hosting page.

Q. Which web hosting package do I need for a blog/shopping cart web site?
A. You will need, at the minimum, an Advanced Web Hosting Package in order to properly host a blog, bulletin board or an eCommerce web site such as WordPress, Drupal, phpBB, ZenCart or OScommerce, however the Enterprise Web Hosting Package is highly recommended.

Q. Can you host a __________ (your favorite script) type of web site?
A. RVHWD’s web server supports any PHP-based script that is compatible with PHP5, it is also backwards compatible with some older scripts using PHP4.x as well.  This includes but is not limited to WordPress, LifeType, WebCalendar, Drupal 6/7, Joomla, Mambo, PHP-Nuke, Magento, ZenCart, Moodle, Wikka and too many more to list!  If you are not sure, please Contact RVHWD for more details.

Q. How do I set up my web hosting account?
A. After your subscription payment has been verified, you will receive several email notifications with a subscription payment receipt, instructions as well as another email with your web hosting account details.  Follow the instructions and your web hosting account will be set up in no time at all.  RVHWD also offers this as a service for a nominal fee.

Q. How do I get my web site uploaded to my web hosting account?
A. There are two ways in which this can be accomplished; one is using the File Manager from your cPanel and the other is using a FTP Client.  This is explained in more detail in the FTP FAQs.

Q. I set up my account and uploaded my web site; why is it not showing up?
A. As is explained in the DNS FAQs, it can take as much as 24-48 hours until your web site is visible throughout the entire web.  If it has been longer than 48 hours, please Contact RVHWD with the issue and it will be investigated promptly.

FTP FAQs

questionQ. What does FTP mean?
A. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.  In simple terms it is a method by which you may upload or download files and folders from a website.

Q. Where can I download a free FTP program?
A. We highly recommend downloading WS FTP from here.  Although there are a number of other choices out there that will work just as well and the best things in life are not always free.

Q. It’s not letting me upload my files, what’s wrong?
A. Make sure you are uploading to the right web folder directory which is the “public_html folder.

Q. Why doesn’t my FTP password change when I change my cPanel password?
A. Please allow 24 hours for your FTP password to sync with your cPanel password.

Q. This is so confusing/frustrating!  Help!
A. For a nominal fee, RVHWD can easily and quickly take care of uploading or downloading files for you.

eMail FAQs

questionQ. How do I create one or more email accounts?
A. To create an email account, log into your control panel and click add/remove email accounts.  You will be limited by the web hosting package that you have selected for the number of total email accounts that you may create.

Q. Can I use a third-party program or my smart phone to get my email?
A. Yes you may use any program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or your smart phone to obtain your email, but you will need to follow the instructions of those programs in order to set it up.

Q. What do I put for both incoming and outgoing mail server?
A. For both incoming and outgoing mail server, enter: mail.yourdomainhere.com

Q. Where do I go to check my emails using my browser?
A. You may access it by typing the following in your browser address bar: www.yourdomain.com/webmail/  You may also access your email by logging into your cPanel and selecting the “Read Mail” icon or link.

Please Note: Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) do not allow e-mail to be sent using Port 25 or 26.  If you are able to receive e-mail, but unable to send on either Port 25 or 26, you will have to use your ISP’s SMTP server to solve the problem.  For example, check out this article on Comcast email issues.

Q. How can I setup Webmail to go directly to Horde, Neomail or Squirrel Mail?
A. Log into the one you prefer to use, after doing so copy the entire URL from your address bar.  You will not need to log into your cPanel and create a sub-domain to go to the address you just copied.
