Welcome back for the installment to this series, but first let’s do a quick review of SEO Myths: #4 SEO is for Nerds.  In that article it was discussed that you should be mindful of shoving SEO off on someone else in another department and expecting best practices to be adhered to at all times.  Typically, this is thrown into the laps of the folks populating the IT Department who may or may not have an inkling of what you are looking for.

Whether they do or not or you decide to contract someone to do this for you, this often to leads to the next myth that we intend to bust.

#5 – More links are better than content

You may be asking yourself, “Should I be investing in link-building or content generation?”  Many so-called ‘experts’ will recommend that you focus on the link-building and may even make promises of getting you listed on the first page of Google.  You may even hear something along the lines of more links is better than more content, because links are an important part of your website’s authority.

SEO Myth: BUSTED!

Incorrect!  Far too often, when businesses hire an outside firm for SEO, the focus quickly goes to the quantity of links instead of building quality of links.  But that was thoroughly addressed in SEO Bootcamp #12 – link-building is no longer a numbers game and the search engines are making pretty damn sure of it.

Your focus needs to be on having diverse and relevant content on your website.  So if you are trying to decide whether to invest your marketing budget into anything for your website, RVHWD says, “Invest in content – someone writing great content is a far wiser choice that will give you considerably better returns on your investment.”

When you invest in content, it can be used on your website pages, blog posts, white papers, sales promotions, social media content and more!  These are all things that will develop more quality links over the course of time.
