SEO Myths: #3 Ranking No. 1

How to be a SEO Myth Buster

How to be a SEO Myth Buster

In the last article titled, SEO Myths: #2 SEO Ranking, you learned that the ill-conceived notion of SEO is all about getting the best possible search engine ranking for keywords to drive millions of visitors to your website, is not exactly what SEO is all about.  It is a part of it, but it is not the grand prize that click-through rate (CTR) has become!

Good stuff, right?  Well let’s move on to the next myth, because it ties directly into the previous one.

#3 – You Must Rank Number 1

In order to get traffic from search engines, you must capture and hold the #1 slot!  Have you ever heard this one before?

Yeah, we have too and it’s a load of crap.

SEO Myth-Busting #3

Quite a few studies of user behavior and CTR have shown that searchers favor the top results, particularly the top three.  Those same studies also show that the same holds true for subsequent pages too; people prefer the results that get listed towards the top of the second, third and even the fourth results page.  Now throw in there the fact that search results have been upgraded to display author profiles/information, dates & times as well as rich-text snippets, CTR even for listings not in the number one spot are experiencing much greater volume!

SEO Myth: BUSTED!

The reason for this is the same as in the previous article, it all comes down to Social Search and the impact it is having in reshaping marketing on the web.  Bing, Google and Yahoo! are all already using it to one degree or another and the future of search engine results is leaning heavily in favor of it continuing.  Add into the fact that some of the social media websites are also dabbling in social search, this will skew results even further (not to mention CTR too).

The take-home here is that relevant information (i.e. good content) and user-friendly listings are considerably more valuable than search engine ranking alone.  By creating content that people actually want to consume, the rest will pretty much fall into place on its own.  So you see, you do not have to rank in the first place anymore in order to experience smashing success.
