You had better get your [SEO] wired tight numb-nuts!
(R. Lee Ermey – Full Metal Jacket)

It’s that time again maggot, drop the jelly donut and listen up!  The last time around in SEO Bootcamp Part 18, I learned you about making sure that your SEO efforts and your social media marketing efforts need to be in perfect unison.  They need to be complimenting each other as well as communicating too.  Ideally, your SEO and your social media marketing should be linked together as part of the same plan, communicating the same message across all forms of media.

In order to do this, you need to make that your [expletive deleted] is in order by making sure that your company profiles are up-to-date.  You also need to take stock of what your strengths are, as well as your weaknesses.  Last but not least, you also need to create an inventory of keywords that you want to rank highly with.

But that was just the first step in the process… now it’s time you got your head screwed on straight, so here is the next step.

Social Media Influencers

Social Media Influencers – Because every business needs a few cheerleaders!

Step 2 – Find and cultivate your social media influencers

That’s right numb-nuts, the reason that social media is a natural extension of search is because it adds both authority and relevancy to content.  Sound familiar yet, maggot?

Well forget about Mary Jane Rotten-[expletive deleted] and her pretty pink panties for a moment and think about this – according to Nielsen Research, 92% of all consumers worldwide trust recommendations from friends and family more than any form of advertising.  This percentage has grown from 74% in 2007.  As recommendations from friends and family become more prevalent online, the influence they carry will also carry more weight in social media, social search and search engine results.  For that reason alone Private Pyle, it is time to start thinking of your company’s fans as a part of your inbound marketing team.

  • Find Your Cheerleaders – This is as simple as getting spending some time to get to know that people that are regularly sharing your content with others.  Put together a list of contacts with more than a thousand followers and has a history of engagement in your content.  Knowing who these people are will expand your reach online and will also ultimately increase the rate at which your content is found.  These people are your primary social media influencers.
  • Nurture Your Cheerleaders – Once you know who these people are, find ways to build them up, encourage them and nurture their evangelism.  The simplest and also the most meaningful is just thanking them for sharing your content and spreading the word about your company or organization.  But you can also give them access to sneak peeks at upcoming news or announcements or giving them a special invitation to an open-house.  Get creative numb-nuts!

But you need to be careful and NOT offer them goods or services in exchange for talking about your company.  Doing so is ethically questionable at best and may be considered to be a conflict of interest.  In some cases it may also be illegal and then your [expletive deleted] will really be in a bind!

That should keep your thinking over the weekend!  Be back here next time for SEO Bootcamp Part 20 for the next step and be sure to share this with a friend maggot; at ease!
