#4 Visitor-Friendly Formatting
When blogging, or any other sort of writing, it is very important to break your text up into chunks that are more easily digested by the reader. For all intents and purposes of this article, we’ll just say that reading something online is a lot like reading something printed in a book or a paper. Keeping that in mind as you write, the reader will be able to quickly scan through the text, reading sub-headings, highlighted text and bullet points. See what a little bit of formatting can do for a blob of text? It took a fairly uninteresting block of text and turned it into something that is visually appealing, easy to read and even easier to quickly scan over. It also took advantage of adding some keywords as well as linking to other website content that is both relevant from the standpoint of search engines, but adds value for the website visitor by conveniently adding links to common next-steps in the information gathering process.
Both examples also used another key feature that was covered in earlier articles; the use of images and graphics that break up the text as well as adding visual cues. The smiley faces could just as easily be replaced by other images or graphics as well as infographics that demonstrate your key points by using statistics in a visually appealing way. In most cases, it is also a good idea to add some form of caption below the images that also emphasizes your key points or offers a call-to-action. Either way works just fine.
The main idea here is to remember that formatting is your friend (as well as everyone else’s). A little bit of formatting such as paragraphs, bold and italic words, bullet points and capitalized titles all help the reader quickly decide if they want to know more about what you have written. It is also a great idea to use one or more images with each article that helps to break up the text as well as help to make your point(s).
In the next article, Business Blogging 101 Part 13, we will take another, closer look at calls-to-action within your text as well as other important places on your blog and website!
Keep on blogging!
